Aleutian Islands of Alaska: Living on the Edge

What a gorgeous book! We just received this in the library today and I had to immediately leaf through it. The pictures are stunning.....I haven't read the entire thing.....but it seems all islands are included with stories and photos accompanying them. Gert Svarney (Alena's beautiful grandmother), Sharon (Alena's beautiful mom), (there's even a photo of Alena's sister out at Humpy Cove), Katherine McGlashan (Cape Sarichef Salon), even April from Akutan and her husband are pictured in it! Lots of boat pics, eagles, otters, all kinds of sea life...
It is available at Barnes & Noble......which is where our first copy came from...we ordered 4 more from our regular ordering spot....this one will be available for perusal in our Alaskana room (reference only, to be read here)....When we receive the others, I will put 3 in our general collection for checkout! So for you locals, come on in and take a peek.....

So, check it out! Enjoy!

  3. I don't like the pix of me in that book... I was a little on the heavy side.. (I don't really like the pix of me, but at least I'm in it... :D) But yeah a story and pix of my dad Hugh Pelkey are in there, and pix of my hubby and me! This was the same book I referenced about in my blog! AWESOME BOOK!

Ken (the author and one of my friends) should be going there to Dutch Harbor for a book tour sometime in May I believe! :) FYI

  4. In my opinion, you looked gorgeous, just like you do now. So stop being so hard on yourself, okay? I cannot wait to read the entire book and reflect on my years here on this island....I could write a book based on my experiences here on the island....it just wouldn't be G-rated, that's for sure...I certainly have the material..stay tuned!

  7. Got a great deal on the book through Barnes and Noble. Can't wait until it arrives! What are the chances of a middle-aged woman (registered nurse) fitting in in a place like Dutch Harbor/Unalaska? I love cold and snow, am pretty independent and 16 years experience taking care of cardiac patients? Maybe it's just a pipe dream for now, someday. . . maybe someday. . . Kathy

Hey Kathy - the day you go to Dutch, I'm following........LOL!

  9. The clinic here could absolutely use an RN, in my opinion....it leaves alot to be desired...sorry if I offended anyone, but I pray every night that I don't get sick enough to HAVE to go there! So come on up Kathy & Lori! We need you :)

  10. It's true Lauri, I personally have not been to that place in YEARS, nor my family! Lucky for me, we can be seen at the other clinic...

Lori..come up and get that place running smoothly!

  11. Cookie Dough - I'm not in the medical field like Kathy, but do have many more talents. Currently, I work for the public school system. I'm in the data field related to our funding for all students. Although, I would love to run a bed/breakfast inn and if I remember correctly, CB told us the coffee shop was being sold. I could/would absolutely love to do that or maybe even take over the Crab Pot restaurant (did I remember the correct name?). If those options aren't there, then I think CB could find me a job at the hotel..........LOL!

  12. I think it's Kathy who is in the medical field. Kathy, WE NEED YOU up here!

Lori, keep checking with CB for hotel jobs....good thing about working there, I believe they have housing. It's worth a try...beware, though...I only came here for ONE year, it's been 10!

How can I be seen at your clinic, cookie????? ;)

  13. I fell in love with Sitka when I visited, but I really want to see Unalaska and Akutan. Saw an interesting AK show last night and would love to see Attu too! I know if I ever came close to inquiring about jobs, I would stay. Have so much holding me in FL right now and a daughter that graduates in 2 years, but after that, as I have told CB, I'm out of here!

  14. ohh Poor Lauri, I can't think of a way :( You have to go to the other one I wish we could see everyone!

My book came today!! IMG it's soooo gorgeous! I have to ask April what a seagull egg tastes like. He sees the same stuff we do, but the pictures are so much better. Nice to see all the familiar faces..thanks for the heads up!

  15. ha ha ha ha ha.. I don't know what kind of lettuce you guys eat.. but sea gull eggs don't taste nothing like lettuce to me!!
They are slightly fishy... I only like mine in a custard pie. There is only a small one week opening in May or June where we can pick them, we have to get them fresh laid with no chicks growing in them yet. And sometimes the weather doesn't let us get there in time.. so some years we don't get any, some years we can go back day after day and harvest fresh eggs. There are a couple places where we go on both the north and south sides of our islands.

but yeah... doesn't taste like lettuce!! that's for sure... LMAO! She just wanted you to try it!
PS are you talking Kathy McG's mom Irene? I love her!! She's an awesome lady! She's known me since I was a baby!! :D

  16. Just a note to promote buying the book: As soon as profits meet the expenses, a portion of the future profits will be dedicated to Camp Qungaayux^ funding. This was the gentlemen's agreement between Ken, Jerah, Moses, Jeff, and myself when we agreed to participate in the project. It is so noted in the book. So, please go out and buy that book!!! I believe the Museum and the WWII Visitor's Center are carrying them.

  17. Yeah Irene Mc She's wonderful, she cracks me up! I knew they'd taste fishy...how could they not!
Sharon, I've been showing my book to everyone, I'm working on selling them :)
I'm so jealous that that guy can see things I see all the time and make them look so much better, I'm the world's worst photographer...especially anythign outside.

  18. Sharon - would it cost me more to buy the book from you and have it shipped or should I just go to either Amazon or B&N and check out prices? My birthday is right around the corner and I was hoping to get a few books I've been wanting.

April - I truly enjoy your explanations and try to frequent your blog, but haven't posted on your blog yet. You're so detailed, I need some long quiet time to read your blog.
